About the African Bureau

Structure and reporting

The African Regional bureau has been established in September 2006 to serve as ISOC's physical point of presence in region. For administrative purposes, it is organized under the Development and Membership department. However, it will work across all focuses of ISOC in the region, i.e. policy, education and membership.

Role and responsibilities

The African regional Bureau is expected to:

Drive regional and local recognition of ISOC, its policies and its mission
Promote activities and initiatives at regional and sub-regional levels

In the policy area the Bureau implements, at a regional level, the activities and projects of ISOC's Public Policy programs, in conjunction with the Public Policy team. It will also identify the needs and opportunities for policy initiatives (specifically in the technology policy area).

In the education area, the Bureau contributes to identifying needs and opportunities for educational initiatives, identifying the top priorities for the region related to capacity building, including technical training and other education needs, engaging and developing relationships with regional technical leaders and organizations in support of ISOC's education efforts.

Membership activities within the responsibilities of the Bureau include understanding and supporting the needs of chapters, highlighting important issues to ISOC staff as appropriate, developing and maintaining close relationships with regional ISOC chapter representatives.

The African Regional Bureau manager is Dawit Bekele.
