Internet Society Opens Regional Bureau for Latin America and the Caribbean

Reston, Va. and Geneva, Switzerland – 30th January 2007 - The Internet Society (ISOC) announces the opening of a new Regional Bureau for Latin America and the Caribbean. It will be headed by Mr. Sebastián Bellagamba and located in Buenos Aires, Argentina.

The Regional Bureau for Latin America and the Caribbean will be a focal point for ISOC activities including education, capacity building and policy initiatives. It will allow the Internet Society to work more closely with local ISOC Chapters and the regional internet community in its ongoing initiative to understand and address local issues relating to the development of the Internet.

The Regional Bureau for Latin America and the Caribbean closely follows the Regional Bureau for Africa which opened in Ethiopia in the third quarter of 2006. Additional bureaus are planned contingent upon evaluation of current regional activities.

Mr. Bellagamba, an Argentine citizen living in Buenos Aires, has a distinguished career in the development of the Internet in Latin America. He served as President of ISOC Argentina, Chair of the ICANN ASO Address Council and Chair of the Argentine chapter of the IPv6 Task Force. He is also an owner of Servicio Satelital S.A., an Argentine Internet and telecommunications provider.

Mr. Bellagamba will focus his efforts on assessing the diverse needs of the Internet communities in Latin America and the Caribbean and working to extend ISOC programs and initiatives in the region.

“Our Regional Bureau initiative is an integral part of ISOC’s plans to support the continued development of the Internet,” says Lynn St. Amour, ISOC’s President and CEO, “ISOC extends a warm welcome to Sebastián as he joins our organization to lead the Latin American and Caribbean Bureau.”
