ISOC ECC meeting

Notes of ISOC DE event

At the end of the RIPE meeting week, on Friday, 9 May, ISOC Germany organised a discussion on the topic of data retention for Internet providers, the intentions, risks, and the effects on user behaviour and society at large.

Invited guests were Dieter Wiefelspütz, member of Parliament and spokesperson of the SPD (Social Democratic Party, member of the coalition) on matters of the interior and Ricardo Cristof Remmert-Fontes, member of the Working Group on data retention (AK Vorrat).

20 other guests, members of ISOC Germany as well as of the Dutch and Polish ISOC chapters and other interested individuals engaged into the fruitful and civil discussion.

Mr Wiefelspütz explained the Parliaments majority's view on demands for efficient law enforcement and referred to the underlying European Directive that was just implemented by national legislation. Mr Remmert-Fontes, whose working group had challenged the law data retention at the Constitutional Court with a preliminary success, pointed out risks and consequences for the society and communication between individuals should the data retention be implemented as passed.

ISOC Germany plans to follow up on this topic that affects Internet usersthroughout the European Union and maybe beyond.
