MeetingsChapter and Members Meeting in APRICOT 2008Location: Taipei, Taiwan Attendees Toru Takahashi - ISOC Japan By Phone: Apologies: Agenda1. Introduction and welcomeThere was a round table of introductions. 2. ISOC Briefing on Current Activities and FocusISOC Overview - Frederic Donck Frederic gave a presentation highlighting ISOC's strategic initiatives. Asia was highlighted as key in ISOC's mission to get the next billion on-line. The presentation is available on the chapter wiki. Chapter Activities - Anne LordAnne presented the chapter development plan and gave an update on ongoing activities within the context of the plan. Effort has been devoted recently to rejuvenating chapters where the chapter heads have indicated that they are not able to continue with the chapter. In such cases, rejuvenation efforts have been commenced with the membership of the chapter. An update was also given on the Sphere project which has commenced and is going well with good participation from Chapters. The slides are available here. 3. Experience Sharing from ChaptersISOC-HK - Edmon Chung Edmon gave a background to ISOC HK. They were chartered in November 2005. They are involved internationally in APRALO in ICANN and in other fora. Key events include Chinese Wikimania (Co-hosts), ISOC HK and Internet Society of China luncheon, IPv6 training with APNIC and two workshops, HK Shenzhen Biennale Media Sponsor - architecture and urbanism exhibition which Introduces how ICT is a big part of urbanisation. They also hosted a live wiki attack and defense seminar on Feb 23rd. Most events attract around 100 persons. Future plans: activities ad hoc mostly but that will change. Are going through an incorporation to become an independant local authority. With project funding granted to them in 2007, they are following through with Digital Public Sphere book proposal. They want to continue participation in IGOV and standards - want to provide input into local legislation and processes. Interested in doing this locally and internationally. ISOC-TW - Yao-ming Yeh Chartered in July 1996. Currently 200 members. located in TW. Now officially recognised by the Government. Long process! Now "above ground". Main member services are to provide international and domestic Internet news to members. Main focus is to "distinguished lecturer series", "marching to campus"programme which involves working with different college students to promote technologies. Also involved in Keeping Internet Development history for Taiwan. Project funding money is funding "the past and future of Internet Development in Taiwan". ISOC-JP - Toru Takahashi ISOC Japan was the first Asian chapter in 1994. In Japan there are many other players in the JP community like IAJ that have ISOC members. INET 2000 in Yokohama. In Japan new policy that households should have 100Mbps to the house. Internet is growing in Japan and the Chapter needs some 'rejuvenation' and discussions on how to re-organise themselves will take place in Japan. ISOC-AU - Holly Raiche IPv6 summit is planned from November 10th-12th. They have developed an IPv6 Special Interst group and have funding from Government which allows them to do outreach. Recently Cheryl Langdon Orr also participated in ICANN, in ALS on behalf of the chapter and chair of the ALAC. Google is a major sponsor of their "Document Freedom day" which is to do with open source documents and information. ISOC AU is involved in lobbying and the chapter was in Canberra meeting with Government recently and will be a member of OECD Australian Delegation. Additional activities involve Working their membership list. ISOC AU is interested in website development and collaboration as they are revamping their website. ISOC-FR - Sebastien Bachollet Sebastien commented on how he appreciated ALAC chairing by ISOC AU. ICANN meeting in Paris coming up. They are organising their 7th meeting on Egeni in June on 20th June. They are following position of ISOC on JPA. Met Tony Hill in Paris, last summer and discussed OECD ministerial in June. Chapters of region must do as much as possible to participate in OECD meeting (day before main meeting). Sebastien asked if the EU directives document be shared with chapters? Frederic confirmed that this would be possible. PICISOC - Franck Martin Workshops are being planned on IPv6 as part of PACINET. They are assisting with planning for PACNOG. Working with a group involved in GIS and remote sensing. looking at being a CERT in the PAcific Islands. The Women in IT group is active. In 2 weeks time there is an ESCAP meeting to look at connectivity in the region, satellite in rural islands. 4. Internet and Law in Taiwan - Hubert HsuRecent court decisions in Taiwan regarding the Internet were presented by Hubert Hsu. The courts have realised the nature of the Internet and decisions are interpreted conservatively based on traditional law systems. Hubert gave several examples and the details are in the presentation on the wiki. 5. ISOC Project Funding UpdatesISOC-TW (Dr. Yaoming Yeh, ISOC TW) ISOC Taiwan was awarded a Project funding Grant to document "Internet history : The past and Future of Internet Development in Taiwan - A wiki approach". The motivation of the project is to use web2.0 to share Internet content among users. Looking to gather volunteers to contribute to build a platform. They also aim to educate users. The project was started in Dec. 2007. Looking to install servers and establish service in august 08. They have some of their content on the website already under development.
